I am a huge fan of the app Houzz! I could spend hours looking at picture after picture of different homes and projects. I also receive updates from their website with interesting tips and ideas. The email I received from them today mentioned 7 things to do before you move into a home.
When you purchase a new home I'm sure you're like most of us and have a laundry list of projects you would like to get done as soon as you move in. It can be overwhelming to determine the priority of all these projects. Some need to be done immediately for you to be able to live in the home while others well, lets admit, never get done at all because they are huge wants. The list below will assist you in determining what you should really consider doing before you move your first item into your new home. As I'm sure you know it's so much easier to do things while the house is still vacant rather than having to work around all of the furniture and boxes. So here we go...
1. Change the exterior locks. This should be at the top of your list for safety reasons. You never know who still has a key to your home.
2. Get the house cleaned up. Some previous homeowners will leave a house seemingly clean for you but you can never be sure. It's always a good idea to have the job done yourself so you can ensure it's clean for you and your family.
3. Paint the walls and ceilings. Depending on the condition of the home you may want to consider having the baseboards painted as well. This is obviously a huge job and something you may want to hire someone to do but it will definitely pay off. This will make the house feel new and feel like your own. Not to mention it's so much easier to do while the house is vacant so you won't have to workaround the furniture.
4. Get some organizers. This may be something you feel you can do later on but getting a few shelves for the closet or laundry room and a few organizers in the kitchen can make all the difference in the world when you go to unpack. You don't want to have to unpack and later go back to reorganize everything.
5. Install new switch plates and other devices. When homes are a little older these are the little things that can really make it feel and look dated and dirty. It's an easy fix to replace discolored cover plates or air vents. I think with this small change the house will feel cleaner and newer.
6. Have the mechanical equipment cleaned and serviced. This couldn't be more important for those of us in the Phoenix area. You definitely do not want the air conditioning to go out right in the middle of summer. You'll feel more at ease if you have it serviced and ready to go for your use.
7. Install window treatments. You'll want these for obvious reasons such as privacy but they will also help to keep the heat of the sun out during those warm summer days. As you live in the home you might want to get something more custom to fit the design of your home but it's good to have some basic window coverings in to begin with.
I hope you find this list helpful. Here's a link to the articlehttp://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/18707258/list?utm_source=Houzz&utm_campaign=u372&utm_medium=email&utm_content=gallery4
